Description
Adriaen Collaert, after Maarten de Vos,
Flemish c.1560-1618, and Flemish 1532-1603-
The Four Continents;
engravings on paper, with watermarks centre left, each 21.3 x 26 cm. (trimmed within the plate mark), four (4).
Provenance:
Beryl Gascoigne, UK.
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present series of prints serve as an iconic example of the depiction of 'The Four Continents', a popular subject amongst 16th- and 17th-century artists, which reflected a growing interest in the foreign lands which explorers were encountering over the period. Although the theme was treated by a number of artists, the present set of compositions was particularly significant, with the Metropolitan Museum noting of Collaert's depiction of the personification of America that, 'While not the first representation of a feather headdress in New World prints, this may have been one of the most influential'. Another set of this same series sold at Galerie Kornfeld Auktionen AG, Bern, on 12 September 2025, lot 3017 (£3,425 hammer).
