Lot 61
Description
Domenico Piola,
Italian 1627-1703-
Madonna and Child seated on a cloud, supported by angels;
black chalk, pen, brown ink, and wash on paper, numbered '4' (upper left), 42.9 x 29.5 cm.
Provenance:
Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 1 July 1997, lot 55.
Property of the Late Professor Eric Gerald Stanley, FBA (1923-2018) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Stanley).
Note:
Piola was one of the most prominent and prolific painters active in Genoa in the late 17th century. He often collaborated with family members, including his brother-in-law Stefano Camogli (c.1610-1690/1709), to produce numerous ceiling frescoes for churches and palaces across the city. The format of the present work suggests that it was used to inform a ceiling decoration. Piola's fresco of Madonna among the angels in the main apse of the Chiesa di San Luca in Genoa, for example, exhibits some similarities with the composition of the present work.
