Lot 50
Description
Follower of Anna Ruysch,
Dutch 1666-1754-
Still life with grapes, peaches, and pomegranates on a marble ledge, with a butterfly and fly;
oil on panel, 44.5 x 37.1 cm.
Provenance:
with David Messum, Beaconsfield.
Note:
The present work recalls the paintings of Anna Ruysch, daughter of the botanist and anatomist Frederik Ruysch (1638-1731) and younger sister of fellow artist Rachel Ruysch (1664-1750). Indeed, Ruysch's influence is particularly evident in the composition of the present work, with two peaches resting on a closely-studied marble ledge under glassy grapes, and in the distinctive depiction of the vines which curl above them.
Similar works by Ruysch include paintings which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 8 December 2022, lot 440, and at Christie's, London, on 7 December 2007, lot 145.
