Lot 47
Description
Circle of Jacob van der Kerkhoven, called Giacomo da Castello,
Flemish c.1637-after 1712-
Still life with a swordfish, cauliflower, fennel, dead birds, and fungi on a ledge;
oil on canvas, 71.2 x 97.6 cm.
Provenance:
Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 8 July 1994, lot 228 (as 'Circle of Simone del Tintore, 17th century').
Anon. sale, Dorotheum, Vienna, 6 October 1999, lot 253 (as 'Attributed to Adriaen van Utrecht').
Anon. sale, Bonhams, London, 7 July 2010, lot 50 (as 'Circle of Nicolas-Henry Jeaurat de Bertry').
Note:
The present work is entirely reminiscent of the still life paintings of the celebrated Flemish painter Jacob van der Kerckhoven, who was was active in the Veneto region in Italy and was one of the most prominent still life and animal painters there in the 18th century.
Van der Kerckhoven's work shows the influence of the Flemish and Italian schools of still life painting. From his Flemish training he retained an accurate precision in the description of details and qualities, both in animals and fruits or other foods. The Italian influence reveals itself in the bright Italian light, which he often tempered by the use of chiaroscuro. He painted large and ambitious compositions similar to those he had seen in the workshops of Antwerp and in the studio of his master Jan Fyt (1609-1661) while at the same time developing a personal language of almost naive charm.
