Description
Manner of Claude Gellée, called Claude Lorrain,
late 18th century-
An Italianate landscape with figures resting with sheep, a bridge and ruins beyond;
oil on panel, 25 x 33 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present composition is evidently inspired by Claude's (1600-1682) idyllic Italianate landscapes, typically featuring figures in Classical dress dancing, resting, or making music. This painting recalls landscapes by Claude which sold at Christie's, New York, on 19 April 2018, lot 54, and in the collection of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam [2750 (OK)], similarly lit by a faint, warm evening glow.
