Lot 40
Description
Follower of Antoine Coypel,
French 1661-1722-
Diana bathing with her nymphs;
oil on copper, 26.5 x 30.5 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work is reminiscent of Coypel's distinctive mythological scenes, often featuring languorous nudes with flowing, pastel-coloured robes, reclining in a wooded landscape, such as, for example, his 'Alliance of Bacchus and Cupid' which sold at Christie's, London, on 16 December 1988, lot 61, and his 'Triumph of Galatea' which sold at Sotheby's, New York, on 25 January 2001, lot 217. Coypel himself also painted a version of Diana bathing with her nymphs, which was made into a print by Gaspard Duchange (1662-1757).
The goddess Diana can be identified by the headdress she wears, adorned with a crescent moon with which she is associated.
