Lot 39
Description
Follower of Mathys Schoevaerdts,
Flemish c.1665-after 1702-
Two landscapes: An Italianate landscape with figures outside an inn; and Landscape with figures riding on horseback through a Dutch village;
the first oil on canvas, the second oil on panel, the first bears various partially indistinct inscriptions to the upper and lower stretcher bars, and a partially indistinct label inscribed 'J.A. ...[?] / a gift from his / mother ...[?] 1882' attached to the lower stretcher bar, the first 23.5 x 28 cm., the second 23.3 x 29 cm., two (2).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present works are reminiscent of Schoevaerdts's paintings, which combine the influence of the colourful, bustling village scenes of Jan Breughel the Elder (1568-1625) with the sweeping Italianate landscapes which were particularly popular in the 17th century in a manner which itself reveals a debt to the Bamboccianti movement spearheaded by Pieter van Laer (1599-1641).
Similar compositions by Schoevaerdts include a village scene which sold at Hampel, Munich, on 29 June 2023, lot 338, and a river landscape which sold at Wannenes, Genoa, on 2 December 2015, lot 918.
