Lot 22
Description
Follower of Sir Peter Paul Rubens,
Flemish 1577-1640-
Cimon and Pero (Roman Charity);
oil on canvas, 116 x 98 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work depicts the Classical exemplary tale of filial piety, variously known as 'Roman Charity' or 'Cimon and Pero', which enjoyed particular popularity as a subject for artists in the early 17th century. According to the story, Cimon is imprisoned and sentenced to death by starvation, and is subsequently kept alive by his daughter Pero, who nurses him. The guards, upon discovering this, are so moved by Pero's devotion to her father that they decide to free him.
Various versions of this scene were produced by 16th- and 17th-century artists across Europe, with the present composition particularly recalling Rubens's treatment of the same scene, in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam [SK-A-345].
