Lot 16
Description
Follower of Tiziano Vecellio, called Titian,
Italian c.1485/90-1576-
The Assassination of St Peter Martyr;
oil on panel, cradled, bears four red wax stamps verso, one of which reads 'DUCATO / DI / LUCCA' and another which reads 'S[?]ERVAZ D[?]EI', bears incision which reads 'FA' beneath a cross verso, 57.8 x 33.6 cm. (unframed).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work is a very early copy after an altarpiece painted in 1528-29 by Titian for the Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice, which was destroyed by fire in 1867. This composition was immensely influential amongst contemporaries, and various elements can be found in the paintings of subsequent generations of painters, including in Caravaggio's (1571-1610) 'Martyrdom of St Matthew' of 1599-1600, and Annibale Carracci's (1560-1609) 'Resurrection' of 1593. The original painting was huge and it is likely that this small-scale copy was intended for private devotion.
The subject depicts the assassination of Peter of Verona, also known as 'St Peter Martyr' (1205-1252), a Dominican friar and preacher who was killed by a group of Milanese Cathars whilst serving as an Inquisitor in Lombardy.
The wax seals on the reverse are yet to be identified. The Duchy of Lucca was a small Italian state existing from only 1815 to 1847.
