Lot 10

Description

After Guido Reni,
Italian 1575-1642-

The Triumph of Aurora;

oil on canvas, 41.8 x 89.5 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present work is a copy after Reni's original composition, painted as a ceiling fresco for the Casino Rospigliosi, Rome, in 1615, which is considered by many to be the artist's masterpiece. The Royal Collection Trust notes 'Aurora was the rosy-fingered goddess of the dawn. Each morning she would leave her aged husband in bed to lead her brother Helios, the sun-god, to the heavens. Aurora appears at right, her hands full of flowers that she will scatter over the earth. In the sky above the chariot of Helios is the amoretto Phosphorus, the morning star, who holds a lighted torch.'
