Lot 5
Description
After Raphaello Sanzio da Urbino, called Raphael,
Italian 1483-1520-
Madonna della Sedia;
oil on canvas, feigned tondo, 34 x 34 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work is a copy after Raphael's original composition, also known as the 'Madonna della Seggiola', in the collection of the Palazzo Pitti, Florence [1912 n.151]. This is one of the artist's most celebrated and enduring images, conveying a palpable sense of the Madonna's maternal affection for the Christ Child, whilst also exhibiting Raphael's distinctive embrace of the tondo format.
