The present work was formerly in the collection of Carbisdale Castle, a beautiful Scots Baronial residence situated in the heart of the Highlands. Constructed between 1906 and 1917 for Mary Caroline, Dowager Duchess of Sutherland (1848–1912), it was the last castle to be built in Scotland. Housed within was an impressive collection of European 19th-century sculpture and quality 19th-century copies of Old Masters or original British landscapes.

In the years between 1954 and 2010 the castle operated as a youth hostel, after it was generously donated to the Scottish Youth Hostels Association by Captain Harold Keith Salvesen, who in turn inherited the castle and its entire collection from his father Colonel Theodore Emile Salvesen of Culrain.
