Lot 165

Description

A Safavid lacquered papier mache pencase lid and base,
Iran, 17th and 18th century, signed "Painted by ... Muhammad",

Of oblong shape, the lid loose on the base, the lid decorated with a horizontal portrait of a falconer standing with one arm outstretched on which is perched the bird, the other clasping the sword at his waist, depicted in a rocky and treed landscape, inscription above now mainly rubbed, broken tree below, the sides with large open blossoms and butterflies, the interior of both the lid and base are gold and the base is decorated in large gold flowerheads on a black ground,

24.6cm long x 5.1cm diam x 5cm. high

Provenance: Property from an Important Private Collection

The decoration on the base of this qalamdan has a naturalistic design which is typical of pencases ascribed to the 17th century. The flowers to the sides with the insects can be paralleled in three pen boxes of Shafi' Abbasi illustrated in Lacquer from Islamic Lands, Vol. I, nos. 21-23, pp. 50-51, particularly no. 22. The lid is slightly loose on the base and it is possible these are associated with the lid being 18th century.
