A late Safavid/Zand lacquered papier mache pencase with portraits, Iran, dated 1140AH(1728AD), signed Ali ... (?)
Of oval shape with sliding tray, the top features five lobed medallions arranged horizonally, the top and bottom medallions with floral sprays, the center three depicting bust portraits, the young man in the centre is Indian and carried the signature and date, while the other two women above and below are European, the ground is delicate flowers on a deep red ground, the sides decorated with oval portraits, the tray interior is painted gold, the sides with large inscription in gold on a red ground, the base with gold flowers on an olive ground,

The format of the decoration on this qalamdan compares to six examples in the Khalili Collection, London, illustrated in Prof. D. Khalili, T. Stanley, B. Robinson, Lacquer of the Islamic Lands, Vol I, 1996, nos. 37-42 dated between 1704 and 1810.

Qualifying living artists and the descendants of artists deceased within the last 70 years are entitled to receive a re-sale royalty each time their work is bought through an auction house or art market professional.
It applies to lots with hammer value over £1,000 as follows:
0 to £50,000 - 4%
£50,000.01 to £200,000 - 3%
£200,000.01 to £350,000 - 1%
£350,000.01 to £500,000 - 0.5%
Exceeding £500,000 - 0.25%
ARR is capped at £12,500

Export of goods
