Description
Edward Henry Eugene Fletcher,
British 1857-1945-
The Pool of London;
oil on canvas, signed 'E. Fletcher' (lower right), 61 x 91.5 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Fletcher was a prolific marine artist, who, after studying at the Chelsea School of Art, served in the Army Hospital Corps in Nova Scotia before having to leave at the age of 24 in 1882, due to an eye condition. These travels across the Atlantic undoubtedly imparted him with an extensive knowledge of maritime travel, and thus likely informed his bustling shipping scenes, which he sometimes produced under the pseudonym 'John Hayes'. Fletcher often returned to the subject of the Pool of London, as in a strikingly similar pair of marine landscapes which sold at Woolley & Wallis on 2 March 2022, lot 591 (£2,500 hammer), or another which sold in the same sale as lot 592 (£1,300 hammer).
