Lot 443

Description

Philip Alexius de László, PRBA,
Hungarian / British 1869-1937-

A Female Nude: Study for Europa Struggling Against Armament;

sepia chalk and charcoal on card, 53.4 x 76.3 cm.

Provenance:
In the possession of the artist on his death.
By descent to the present owner.

Literature:
Studio Inventory, p.144 (17): Study of proposed composition.
The de László Archive Trust, 'The Catalogue Raisonné of Works by Philip de László (1869-1937) [online]', no.3286.

Note:
The female figure in the present work is depicted lying on her right side, with a snake entwined about her, looking upwards towards her raised left arm.

The present composition was the main motif in the picture de László had planned to paint symbolising the struggle of Europe against the powers of evil after the Great War of 1914-18. Many studies were made, of which the present drawing is an example but the final picture remained unfinished. The canvas was reduced and was later destroyed by order of the artist's Trustees and family in 1947. There exists a similar drawing in charcoal which remains in the collection of a descendant of the artist. (The de László Archive Trust, 'The Catalogue Raisonné of Works by Philip de László (1869-1937) [online]').
