Lot 357

Description

Circle of Julian Russell Story,
British 1857-1919-

Portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified as William Haynes-Smith, seated quarter-length, in profile;

oil on canvas, bears indistinct monogram (left edge), bears inscription 'William Haynes Smith / painted by Julian Storey [sic.] / Queen Acre. 1890' to the central stretcher bar, 60.5 x 50.2 cm. (unframed).

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present work resembles Russell Story's loosely-painted portraits, such as that of Frances Wolseley in the collection of the Brighton & Hove Museums [FAH1967.13]. The inscription appears to refer to William Haynes-Smith (1871-1937) who lived with his partner Howard Overing Sturgis (1855-1920) at the country house Queen's Acre, where they entertained literary figures such as Henry James (1843-1916), Edith Wharton (1862-1937), and E.M. Forster (1879-1970), who wrote a biographical sketch of Sturgis. Sturgis was the younger brother of the novelist Julian Russell Sturgis (1848-1904).
