Lot 351

Description

Attributed to Sir George Hayter,
British 1792-1841-

Portrait sketch of a lady, seated three-quarter length, wearing a black dress and arranging flowers;

oil on canvas, 35.5 x 29.5 cm.

Provenance:
The Collection of Christopher Norris Esq.;

The executors of the late Christopher Norris Esq. sale, Christie's, London, 29 January 1988, lot 143 (as 'Attributed to Sir George Hayter').
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present work, with a focus on the sitter's delicately-painted face against her more loosely-handled clothing and surroundings, is an unfinished study for a final portrait. The work recalls Hayter's lively portraits of elegant ladies, such as, for example, his portrait of Eleanora and Constance Paget
which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 11 April 2024, lot 73, and that of Mary Knowles which sold at Bonhams, London, on 10 July 2019, lot 13.

A comparable unfinished sketch can be seen in his portrait study of Queen Louise of Belgium which sold at Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 7 March 2002, lot 352.
