Lot 182

Description

After William Hoare, RA,
British c.1707-1792-

Portrait of William Pitt the Younger, Prime Minister and 1st Earl of Chatham;

oil on canvas, 76 x 63.6 cm.

Note:
Pitt (1759-1806) served as the last Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1783-1801, before the Act of Union of 1800, and later served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1804 until his death in 1806. He is one of the most influential political figures of the 18th century, defining and consolidating the role of the Prime Minister in government over the course of his tenure. The present work appears to be after an almost identical portrait by Hoare in the Government Art Collection [no.2123].
