Lot 96
Description
Charles-Émile Jacque,
French 1813-1894-
Threshing;
oil on paper laid down on canvas, 15.1 x 22.1 cm. (unframed).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Jacque was a central member of the Barbizon School, alongside his contemporary Jean-François Millet (1814-1875), and, like Millet, was pre-occupied with the depiction of pastoral subjects, such as the farm labourers in the present work.
This painting is believed to be a plein-air preparatory sketch for a series of prints depicting 'French Agricultural Scenes', produced by Jacque for the Illustrated London News in 1859.
