Description
A rare Venetian Calcedonio glass bottle, first half 18th century, the glass with marbled tones of brown and red, with high pontil kick to the underside and string rim top, 24.8cm high
Provenance: Purchased from Mark J. West, 23/03/2003.
Note: Calcedonio glass was first developed on the Venetian island of Murano in the mid-fifteenth century, as a means of imitating semi-precious stones - it was named after chalcedony, a naturally occurring hardstone. The technique involves mixing many colours of glass in layers as well as a special heat treatment while blowing. A near identical bottle was sold at Sotheby's, London, Precious Objects from Asprey & Garrard, 18-19 December 2001, lot 989.
