Lot 198

Description

A Russian Imperial Porcelain Factory presentation Easter egg, St Petersburg, late 19th / early 20th century, decorated with the cipher of Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich (1860-1919), the reverse with the Lesser version of the Russian coat of arms, on a white ground, with a later silk cord suspension, the egg -  7.5cm long

Provenance: Purchased by the ballerina Tamara Tchinarova Finch (1919-2017), thence by descent.

Note: Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich was the sixth son of Emperor Alexander II, brother of Alexander III, and uncle of Nicholas II, the last tsar of Russia. Porcelain Easter eggs produced by the Imperial Porcelain Factory were destined for the Imperial Russian court, and this example would likely have been ordered by the Grand Duke for gifting to a council representative, officer, or family member.

In good condition overall, some very light scratches to the porcelain not easily visible with the naked eye, decoration is generally intact and colours and gilding are bright. Some light wear to the unglazed base, expected with age.
