Lot 103

Description

Style of the Grosvenor School, Stylised Birds, oil on canvas, 59 x 79cm

Note: The London Grosvenor School of Modern Art was founded in Pimlico in 1925 by Ian Macnab.  He was shortly joined by Claude Flight and together they taught pupils including Sybil Andrews, Cyril Power and Lill Tschudi.  Works by these artists represent a unique and vibrant moment in British modernism, capturing the essences of Futurism and Cubism, and combining it with the tumultuous, ever-evolving nature of the inter-war years.

The stretcher is secure and sits wells in the frame.  Re-lined.  The canvas is taut on the stretcher.  The paint surface is stable on the support.  Some very fine and settled craquelure throughout.  Some wrinkling to the canvas, though unobtrusive.  Varnish appears clear and even throughout.  Some tiny abrasions and minor tarnish.  No other visible defects.  Good condition overall and ready to hang.
