Description
Heuer. A stainless steel and aluminium manual wind dashboard mounted chronograph watch with original box, owned by the late John McClean
Super Autavia 71460, 'Mark II' , Circa 1960
17 jewel Valjoux 5 manual wind movement, black dial with luminous painted Arabic numerals, white printed chronograph outer seconds, subsidiary dials for running seconds and 30 minute recording, rotating red and black bezel for elapsed hours or second time zone indication, luminous and red tipped hands for 'normal and recording' times, second execution stainless steel and 'Profectus' coated case, winding crown and chronograph button to the top, the case held back by three screws, case back signed Heuer-Leonidas SA, dial signed Heuer, together with the original Heuer box
John McClean was a well-known member of the Motor Trade in Northern Ireland and spent over 30 years as a privateer Rally driver, taking part amongst others in the Manx International, the Donegal International and the Circuit of Ireland during the late 60's and 70's.
The Heuer watch brand was virtually synonymous with motorsport in the 1960s and 70s. Many racers chose to wear Heuer chronographs, the Heuer logo was fairly prominent in many major competitions, and Heuer timing equipment and chronographs were presented as top prizes at many races and rallies. This example is a typical and excellent example of a Heuer dashboard super Autavia timepiece with its original fitted box. These models were produced as far back as 1958 right through in various iterations and executions until the late 1970's. They were touted as the first dash-board mounted chronograph for motorcars, power boats and airplanes. This example is a good Mark II example and was likely presented to and used by Mr McClean for his many racing victories.
With thanks to Jeff Stein with his valued advice and help on this footnote.
