Weights of this type, made during the Warring States and Eastern Han dynasty, are thought to have been used to hold down the corners of woven mats used for seating or for playing the board game known as liubo. They were generally cast as as animals, often coiled to form a circle, or as human figures or even mountains. Most often made of bronze, they were often decorated with gilding, gold and silver, or gemstone inlay depending on the status of the owner.

Cf. J Rawson, Chinese Bronzes: Art and Ritual, catalogue no.42, British Museum number 1982,0402.1 for a similar bronze weight.
