Lot 140

Description

Circle of William Hodges, RA,
British 1744-1797-

A mountainous river landscape with an angler, a bridge and castle beyond;

oil on canvas, 34.8 x 45.5 cm.

Provenance:
Sir Samuel Luke Fildes, RA (1843-1927);

Property of the late Sir Luke Fildes, sale; Christie's, London, 24 Jun 1927, lot 65, as 'R. Wilson, RA' (11 guineas, 11 shillings).
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present work exhibits a similarity with Hodges' striking topographical paintings, many of which were informed by his travels on Captain Cook's second voyage to the Pacific Ocean from 1772-75. Indeed, the contrast of the diminutive figure in the foreground of the composition with the towering mountain landscape surrounding them recalls a composition by Hodges which sold at Bonhams, London, on 9 December 2015, lot 13, and another which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 5 December 2020, lot 198.
