Description
Russian School,
late 18th century-
Portrait of Platon Levshin, Metropolitan of Moscow;
oil on canvas, 80.3 x 69.3 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Platon Levshin (1737-1812), also known as Plato II or Platon II, was a prominent figure in the Russian Orthodox church, as the religious instructor of Paul Petrovich (1754-1801), the future Emperor Paul I, at the court of Catherine the Great (1729-1796), and as Metropolitan of Moscow between 1775 and 1812. He was a prominent theologian, and an important figure of the Age of Enlightenment within the Russian Orthodox church, undoubtedly influenced in his thinking by the work of Voltaire (1694-1778), with whom Levshin was acquainted.
Levshin is depicted in the same manner in a number of contemporary portraits, including in another version in the collection of the Russian Museum in St Petersburg.
