Description
Follower of Jean-Victor Bertin,
French 1767-1842-
A pair of Italianate landscapes with figures on a path in the foreground;
oils on canvas, each 32.7 x 40.3 cm., a pair (2).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present works are clearly heavily inspired by Bertin's sweeping and dramatic classical landscapes. This is particularly evident in the contrast of the diminutive figures, dressed variously in historical and pastoral costume, who are dwarfed by the towering trees beside which they pause for rest, and the mountains beyond. Similar compositions by Bertin include a work in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland [NG 2465], and another in the Schorr Collection, London [SRR6369917].
