Description
Flemish School,
early 19th century-
The ninth station of the cross: Jesus falls a third time;
oil on canvas, 75 x 93.7 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Another version of the same composition, by an unknown 19th-century artist, appears to be held in the Basilica of Our Lady of Hanswijk in Mechelen, modern-day Belgium, and this likely served as the inspiration for the present piece. The architecture and costumes depicted here suggest a somewhat fanciful interpretation of medieval Low Countries, in keeping with the preoccupation with the Neo-Gothic of many 19th-century artists. This scene depicts the ninth of the fourteen stations of the cross, illustrating the events of the day of Christ's execution.
