Description
Manner of Francesco Furini,
British school, 19th century-
Angel;
oil on canvas, bears stamp for 'C.E. CLIFFORD / ARTISTS COLOURMAN / NO 30 PICCADILLY / OPPOSITE ST JAMES CHURCH / LONDON' verso, bears old label faintly inscribed 'for HW Stanesby[?] / by the wish of his / Father and Mother' attached to the lower stretcher bar, 50.7 x 40.8 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work shares its composition with an oil attributed to Francesco Furini (1603-1646), which is housed in the collection of the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University [1998.1.1]. This scene appears to depict a detail from the moment of the Annunciation, with the Angel Gabriel ascending from heaven to announce to the Virgin Mary that she will become the Mother of God.
