Lot Footnotes
Note: This dish was probably produced to commemorate Sir Clough Williams-Ellis' Portmerion village near Porthmadog, Wales, which first opened in 1926. The mermaid design is thought to be a reference to one of the cottages dating to 1850 on the site of Portmerion. Ashtead Potters pieces from 1928 which bear the swastika mark are now rare, due to many being deliberately destroyed, an unfortunate result of the political circumstances that led to the Second World War.
