Description

"The Stuart Coronation Cup", an English engraved glass goblet and cover celebrating the coronation of George VI and Queen Elizabeth, by Thomas Goode & Co Ltd, 1937, edition no. ­­2 of 25, the cover with hollow thistle finial enclosing a coin, the cover engraved with a spider's web and inscribed for the Stuart Kings of Scotland reigning from 1057 to 1306, the cup-shaped bowl engraved with the English crown and entwining monogram GRE surrounded by sprays of oak and thistle flanked by rampant lions, the bowl extensively inscribed: God Save the King above the English crown and the same in Gaelic to the reverse (A DHIA, GLEIDH AN RIGH); THE CORONATION OF A STUART KING May 12th 1937 within a ribbon and on the opposite panel the same in Gaelic (Crunadh Righ, Stiubhartaich, An Dara La Deug Den Cheitein, Air A' Bhiadhna Mile Naoi Ceud Seachd Deug Air Fhichead An Deidh Breith Chriosd), to the left Mist or Shine the Sun is there and the same in Gaelic to the right (Ma's Ceo No Ma's Gile, Tha A'Ghrian 'Na Haite), the hollow stem enclosing a coin and supported on a square foot, the sides of the foot inscribed THOUGH A BADGE EVERGREEN / FOR THE STUART, THE OAK / OR THE THISTLE, BUT NEVER / THE LAUREL IS SEEN, the underside inscribed THE STUART CORONATION CUP / ONLY 25 WERE MADE AND ALL WERE NUMBERED / THIS IS NO. 2 / HERBERT GOODE / THOMAS GOODE & CO. LTD / LONDON / COPYRIGHT NO 3346. APRIL 21ST 1937, the goblet and cover 32cm high, 15cm wide

Note: This cup is rich with symbolism linking George VI and Queen Elizabeth with Scottish and Stuart heritage, not to mention extensive inscriptions in Gaelic accompanying those in English. The entwining monogram GRE is for George Rex and Elizabeth Regina, the oak and thistle and rampant lions are Scottish symbols, and the spider's web to the cover references the well-known narrative of the Scottish King Robert the Bruce, "Bruce and the Spider".

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

Qualifying living artists and the descendants of artists deceased within the last 70 years are entitled to receive a re-sale royalty each time their work is bought through an auction house or art market professional.

It applies to lots with hammer value over £1,000 as follows:
0 to £50,000 - 4%
£50,000.01 to £200,000 - 3%
£200,000.01 to £350,000 - 1%
£350,000.01 to £500,000 - 0.5%
Exceeding £500,000 - 0.25%
ARR is capped at £12,500
