Description

Dunmore (Earl of), Charles Adolphus Murray, Scenes in Many Lands, from Sketches by the Earl of Dunmore: Eastern & Western Hemispheres, oblong quarto, 3-page preface, 96 collotypes (four double-page, photographic & after original artwork), London: The Autotype Company, c.1897

One plate with marginal pen annotations, a couple of plates with marginal closed tears, one plate with marginal loss & closed tear affecting image (repaired with tape to verso), occasional light soiling & spotting (mostly marginal), original blue cloth, worn & stained in places

Note: This is a scarce copy of a sequel to the volume titled 'Scenes in Many Lands: Arctic to the Equator', currently no other copies have been traced at auction or held institutionally. Examples of 'Scenes in Many Lands: Arctic to the Equator', have been sold at auction (Sotheby's: Travel, Atlases, Maps and Natural History, 15 May 2018, lot 176, and 24 May 2022, lot 13). The work includes landscapes and genre photographs from numerous countries including Hong Kong, Shanghai, Chinese coastal areas, Japan, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Canada, Lebanon, Sri Lanka & the South Pacific. Charles Adolphus Murray (1841-1907) was the 7th Earl of Dunmore, he was appointed Lord-in-waiting to Benjamin Disraeli's government from 1874-80, and also served as Lord Lieutenant of Stirlingshire (1875-85) and Lieutenant-Colonel of the 1st Inverness-shire Rifle Volunteers (1882-96). In recognition of his generous support, the Canadian Pacific Railway named the hamlet of Dunmore, Alberta in Earl Dunmore's honour. 

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

(ARR) - ARTIST'S RESALE RIGHT

Qualifying living artists and the descendants of artists deceased within the last 70 years are entitled to receive a re-sale royalty each time their work is bought through an auction house or art market professional.

It applies to lots with hammer value over £1,000 as follows:
0 to £50,000 - 4%
£50,000.01 to £200,000 - 3%
£200,000.01 to £350,000 - 1%
£350,000.01 to £500,000 - 0.5%
Exceeding £500,000 - 0.25%
ARR is capped at £12,500
