Description

A Chinese porcelain lobed deep plate, Qing dynasty, 18th century, unmarked, decorated with a river landscape in underglaze blue within double border, 25.8cm diameter; together with a Chinese cased mahjong set retailed by A. W. Gamage Ltd., early 20th century, comprising 160 bone tiles and various bone sticks, four bone counters in a lidded case, four bone dice in a wood case, and scoring sheet, housed in a brass-mounted hardwood box with an arrangement of five drawers behind a sliding door, with two brass carry handles to the top, the hardwood box 16cm high, 23.5cm wide, 16.4cm deep, and a Japanese lacquer hinged box with landscape to the lid, 7.6cm high, 19.8cm wide, 17.6cm deep (3)

The plate: expected light pitting and surface dirt to the centre, a hairline crack to the rim, a large chip to the footrim, some minor firing flaws to the underside. 

The mahjong set: the box with some wear, the reverse side with several cracks and splits and held in place by adhesive tape, some metal mounts to the corners lifting up, the handles attached and functional, the drawers with some splits and general surface wear. The accompanying rules and points scoring card with some losses. The tiles are in overall good condition. 

The lacquer box: general surface wear to the exterior including knocks, scratches, and losses of lacquer, the hinges functional, the interior with further minor general wear including scratches and cracks to the lacquer.

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

(ARR) - ARTIST'S RESALE RIGHT

Qualifying living artists and the descendants of artists deceased within the last 70 years are entitled to receive a re-sale royalty each time their work is bought through an auction house or art market professional.

It applies to lots with hammer value over £1,000 as follows:
0 to £50,000 - 4%
£50,000.01 to £200,000 - 3%
£200,000.01 to £350,000 - 1%
£350,000.01 to £500,000 - 0.5%
Exceeding £500,000 - 0.25%
ARR is capped at £12,500

Export of goods

Buyers intending to export goods should ascertain whether an export licence is required before bidding.
