Description
An impressive inscribed cartographic cloth hanging (pata) of the Jain pilgrimage site of Shatrunjaya,
Gujarat, India, late 19th / early 20 century,
Opaque pigments on cloth, an accurate overview of the site showing the hills, shrines, pathways, pilgrims and the steam train station,
in large wood frame
246cm. square
Lot Footnotes
The present map is an arresting example for its faithful rendition of the site which includes the steam train station serving the complex, a rather secular detail for this monumental work of religious inspiration. Such impressive works were hung during the Jain festival of Kartik Purnima, on the fifteenth day of the lunar month of Kartika. Hung in temples, they were displayed to the benefit of the congregation’s members who were not able to make the pilgrimage in person. Large cartographic cloth hanging (pata) of Shatrunjaya are relatively rare : one sold at Christie’s South Kensington, 1 October 2012, lot 273 and another at Bonham’s, 23 October 2018, lot 118.
