ARUP DAS
Born in Bengal in 1924, Arup Das graduated from the Government College of Arts and Crafts Calcutta, in the 1940s. He became a member of All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society, New Delhi in the 1960s and in 1972 Das travelled to Europe on a British Council Scholarship, allowing him to gain exposure as an artist to the art movements and the work done by European masters.
Like many of his contemporaries, Das was affected by the socio-political landscape of the nation in the 1940s and the subsequent changes in the ’50s. The struggles of people became a reason for the human figure occupying a central position in his paintings.
The artist had several shows in India and abroad. He won the national award from the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1957 and the President’s silver plaque in 1957. His works are in the collections of the National Gallery of Modern Art, Sahitya Kala Parishad, and All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society, New Delhi, among others.
Lot Footnotes
This work is possibly by celebrated Indian modernist painter M.F. Husain (1911-2015) founding member of The Progressive Artists Group of Bombay (PAG). It certainly is an accomplished work and bears a strong resemblance in the brushwork and handling of block colours to other untitled portraits of women. See Sotheby's, Boundless India, Mumbai, 29 November 2018, Lot 15;
As Shiv Kapur declares, “The prime symbol of Husain's total view of life is the woman, again perhaps the Indian woman. For pain comes to woman as her natural state, the giving of birth and, because of birth, an awareness of dissolution. Woman is the sentient point of man's natural being, She has curiosity, she suffers, she gives birth willingly. There is pity in her yes, as there is love in her breast. Man is, according to Husain, virile only in heroism, is broken by pain. Husain paints women because these are not heroic times and, tenderly joyous or suffering, women remain vital.” (S. Kapur, Husain, Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi, 1961, pp. 5-6).
