Description
Paul Adolphe Rajon,
French 1842/43-1888-
Portrait of a guardsman in 16th-century costume, holding a pike;
oil on canvas, signed 'P. Rajon' and indistinctly inscribed (upper right), 65 x 53.8 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Rajon was undoubtedly particularly well-known as a printmaker, producing numerous etched portraits of fellow artists such as James Abbot McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) and Félix Bracquemond (1833-1914). Nevertheless, he also worked as a painter, training under Auguste Migette (1802-1884) between 1859-1860 in Metz, before travelling to Paris, where he studied under Isidore Pils (1815-1875), among others, at the École des Beaux-Arts. Rajon clearly had some interest in the depiction of historical military costume, as suggested by his etching of the figure of 'Pulchinello' after Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891).
