Lot 151

Description

Circle of Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix,
French 1798-1863-

Portrait of a young man, standing quarter-length, wearing a black coat and white stock;

oil on board, 47 x 37.5 cm.

Provenance:
The collection of Arthur Kay HRSA (1862-1939);
His sale at Christies, 8th-9th April 1943;
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
With its loose and confident brushwork, this charismatic portrait shows the unmistakable influence of Eugène Delacroix, the leading figure of the French Romantic movement, whose revolutionary virtuoso style had a significant impact on artists working in his orbit. The sketch-like directness of the work presented here recalls Delacroix’s many self portraits, such as the example in the Emil Bührle collection, as well as the artist’s portrait of George Sand, now in the collection of the Musée Eugène Delacroix [MD 2016-1].

While the impact of the French Romantic movement is strongly present in the portrait presented here, elements of the composition, including the dark red curtain which covers most of the background, appear to nod to the conventions of British portraiture.

In 1825, Delacroix did in fact travel to England, where he would meet several giants of British art, such as Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-1828) and Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830), as well as lesser-known artists like the watercolourist Thales Fielding (1793-1837), whose portrait Delacroix also painted. It is possible that the present portrait originates from this fruitful moment of cultural exchange.
