Lot 448

Description

Frank Henry Mason, RBA RI,
British 1875/76-1965-

Columbus discovering America;

pencil, watercolour, and bodycolour on paper, signed 'Frank H MASON' and indistinctly dated (lower left), bears partial old label attached to the backing board, 32.8 x 48.2 cm. (ARR).

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Mason was celebrated for his maritime, coastal, and shipping scenes, and he also produced a number of iconic art deco railway posters. Hailing from a naval family, he enlisted as a cadet on the naval school ship HMS Conway in Birkenhead in 1888, after which he spent some years at sea, working as an engineer for steam-powered ships. Despite no early formal artistic training, Mason then enrolled in the Scarborough School of Art, going on to work as a professional artist. He co-founded the Staithes Art Club in 1901, an artistic colony based in the North Yorkshire fishing town of Staithes.
The present work is a striking departure from the artist's more accurate maritime studies, instead portraying a fanciful historical scene, depicting Christopher Columbus' first sighting of the 'New World' in 1492.
