Description
A dark blue-ground silk 'dragons' Buddhist priest robe, kasaya
18th century
Formed of stitched-together strips of a luxurious dark blue silk bolt finely woven with dragons amongst clouds, arranged in thirteen columns, lined, 103cm x 179cm.
十八世紀 藍地龍紋織錦袈裟
This garment, known as a kasaya, was typically rectangular in shape and worn over an inner robe, secured at the front with a clasp. In accordance with Buddhist regulations, the number of patchwork columns—ranging from five to twenty-five, always in odd numbers—signified the robe's particular function and significance.
