Lot 98

Description

Robert James Enraght Moony,
Irish 1879-1946 -

The Hours of the Day, 1916;

gouache and pencil on paper, signed lower left 'R J E Moony' and signed and dated with monogram lower left and lower right '1916', also with inscribed label attached to the reverse of the frame, 24.5 x 136 cm

Note:
a wonderful example of the burgeoning Pre-Raphaelites movement in Britain, Irish born Moony here creates a wonderful frieze to depict the allegorical hours of the day. Like his contemporaries Phoebe Anna Traquair and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Moony combines a modern sense of design with Symbolist to create a highly evocative work. The artist exhibited with the Fine Art Society, the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, the Manchester City Art Gallery, the Royal Academy, London and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
