Lot 204

Description

Jankel Adler,
British/Polish 1895-1949 -

Erotic study, c.1942-49;

offset drawing and gouache on paper, 42 x 32.5 cm (ARR)

Provenance:
Eric Estorick (by repute);
private collection

Note:
a pencil study for the work is in the Tate Archive, Jankel Adler, Sketchbook 7, p. 25.

The émigré artist Adler developed a unique visual style of abstracted figuration, that was highly influential on an entire generation of British artist including Robert Colquhoun, Robert Macbryde, John Shelton and Franciszka Themerson. The fragile, spidery style of these drawings looks forward to the work of Tracey Emin.
