Description
George William Mote,
British 1832-1909-
Shepherd with his flock on a track near Guildford, Surrey;
oil on canvas, signed and dated 'GW Mote 1888' (lower right), 76.5 x 63.7 cm.
Provenance:
Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 15 March 2006, lot 428.
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Mote was a largely self-taught artist, who often worked under the patronage of the book collector and antiquarian Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872). Phillipps allowed Mote and his wife to live in Broadway Tower, a folly in the Worcestershire countryside, which he owned, and which commanded sweeping views of the surrounding Cotswolds, a setting which clearly served as inspiration for Mote's extensive landscapes.
Mote began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1857, thereafter exhibiting regularly there and at the Suffolk Street Galleries.
