Description
Joseph-Barthélémy Vieillevoye,
Belgian 1798-1855-
Portrait of a young man, wearing a black jacket and cravat, seated on a patterned sofa and holding a book;
oil on canvas, signed and partially inscribed 'B. Vieillevoye / Anvers [?]' (lower right), 97.8 x 82.3 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work exhibits the crisp, highly-finished quality which defines Vieillevoye's portraiture. Although the date has been obscured on this painting, the inscription of 'Anvers' places it before the Belgian Revolution of 1830, at which point Vieillevoye left Antwerp and travelled to Liège.
