Lot 145

Description

Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes,
Spanish 1746-1828-

Quien Se Pondrá el Cascabel al Gato?;

etching with burnished aquatint and drypoint on laid paper, from the first edition of the four additional plates published in L'Art, Paris, 1877, 24.3 x 35.3 cm.

Provenance:
The Oliver Hoare Collection, Christie's, London, 25 October 2019, lot 50 (for £2,000).

Note:
The present print is taken from the print series entitled 'Los disparates' ('The follies'), also known as 'Proverbios' ('Proverbs') or 'Sueños' ('Dreams'), which Goya created between 1815 and 1823. The series is made up of twenty-two prints in its entirety - with the present print among the four which Goya added to the series slightly after the initial eighteen - and consists of dark, dream-like, enigmatic scenes, which historians and critics have long struggled to interpret.
