Description
A Chinese turquoise-ground fahua-glazed baluster vase, meiping
Ming dynasty, 16th century
Outlined in shallow relief and enamelled in aubergine, pale yellow and deep blue with two figures under a pine tree and beside a dwelling, the shoulders adorned with large ruyi-heads enclosing lotus blooms, with upright lappet borders encircling the foot.
30cm high.
明十六世紀 松石綠地琺華人物故事圖紋梅瓶
On fahua-decorated ceramics, thin, raised slip lines are used to outline areas of the decoration. Once fired, enamels are applied and the raised slip lines inhibit different coloured enamels from flowing into each other. This style on stoneware or porcelain resembles cloisonné metalwork. It is unusual to have turquoise enamel as the prominent colour, as deep blue is often favoured.
Cf. For a vase with similar decoration but with a deep blue ground see Sotheby’s, Important Chinese Art, 3rd November 2021, lot 156.
