A rare Chinese blue and white ewer, a cup, and twelve Chinese 'doll's house' miniature vases
Qing dynasty, Kangxi period-19th century
Comprising: nine blue and white small vases and one tiny ewer, Kangxi period; a tiny Qingbai-glazed vase, possibly Song dynasty; a famille verte oviform vase, 19th century; a 'grapevine' ewer with overhead handle and cover, Kangxi period; and a small blue and white cup with 'fu' mark to base, the blue and white ewer, 10.7cm high, the smallest miniature, 2.7cm high (14).
清康熙 青花提梁及其他瓷器一組
Vases less than 10cm high, but retaining the proportions of a larger piece, are often described as doll's house porcelains. During the late 17th century it became popular amongst wealthy Dutch ladies to create lavish doll's houses, complete with scale replicas of all their imported luxuries, including Kangxi blue and white porcelain. They were not meant for children's play, but rather a counterpart to the 'Cabinet of Curiosities' much admired amongst fashionable men. Original, complete doll's houses are now rare, but an 18th century version can be seen preserved in the Gemeentemuseum in the Hague.
