To Be Sold With No Reserve
A copper lota and copper libation spoon argha patra, Rajasthan, India, 19th century, the first on short flaring foot, with wide body and narrow neck rising to a flared mouth, devanagari inscription to the base; the second of typical form, 10.5 cm. high and 25.6cm. long (2).
Provenance: Private UK Collection
Lot Footnotes
The argha patra is widely used in India and is intended for ritual purpose. The form evolves from traditional representations of the yoni, a cosmic symbol representing the female. The vessel is filled with water and held in the hand during puja, the indent in the base used to place a finger for balance. The water is then poured onto the sculpture of a deity to bathe the god or goddess as an act of worship.
