Lot 67

Description

John Thomson of Duddingston, FRSE,
Scottish 1778-1840-

A coastal landscape with a castle on a cliff and two seated figures, a sailing boat in the seas beyond;

oil on panel, bears old handwritten inscribed label 'Landscape / by Revd John Thomson' verso, 35 x 50.6 cm.

Provenance:
The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson.

Note:
The Reverence John Thomson was minister of Duddingston Kirk, a parish on the east side of Edinburgh, from 1805 to 1840. Thomson showed an artistic proficiency from a young age, and, while studying at the University of Edinburgh, became associated with key figures in the city's artistic scene, including Alexander Nasmyth (1758-1840) and Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832). Thomson developed a distinctive Romantic approach which was influenced by JMW Turner (1775-1851), who visited Thomson at his studio in 1818. The present work is characteristic of his paintings, with the artist using a sharp contrast of light and shade to further add to the dramatic atmosphere of the expansive coastal landscape.
