Lot 54

Description

Manner of Adrieaen Jansz. van Ostade,
Dutch, mid-19th century-

Two Tavern Scenes: Three figures inspecting a sheet of paper; and Two men smoking pipes;

oils on convex tin, each 20.5 x 17 cm., a pair (2).

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present works are executed in the style of the 17th-century Dutch painter Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685), who was particularly celebrated for his tavern scenes. Van Ostade's paintings are often populated by figures in interiors, drinking, playing cards, and generally making merry. Indeed, the theme of peasants smoking pipes appears repeatedly throughout his work, as in 'A Peasant filling his Pipe', held at Cannon Hall [A.1942], and his 'Smoker and Drinker in a Tavern', in the Residenzgalerie Salzburg [no.547].
